How can u tell when the mileage is over 100000 miles?

I want to buy a 73 Pontiac Catalina and the guy said it only has 39000 miles on it, but theirs only 5 spaces on the odometer so i don't know if it's 139,000 miles or just 39,000 miles. So on a older car how can you tell?
