What is a watt on cardio equipment and how do I use the information?

All the cardio machines; treadmills, bikes, elliptical, stair-steppers, etc.; monitor "Watts". What is being measured? How do I use this information to improve my fitness? What is the ideal "watt" ( wattage??) for losing weight or for cardio benefits?
